What is a Justice of the Peace?

A Justice of the Peace (JP) is a person appointed by the Governor of Western Australia to perform certain legal functions as a public officer. JPs are community volunteers who provide a free and accessible witnessing service to the public.

Common Duties

  • Witnessing signatures on statutory declarations and affidavits
  • Certifying copies of original documents
  • Witnessing execution of enduring powers of attorney
  • Taking oaths and affirmations
  • Signing search warrants and other court-related documents (qualified JPs)
  • Witnessing land title documents and mortgages
  • Witnessing statutory declarations for government agencies

Jurisdiction

JPs in Western Australia can perform their duties anywhere within the state. Their authority is recognised by government agencies, courts, financial institutions, and other bodies throughout WA.
